Zone Technique is a chiropractic healing method developed by Dr. Thurman Fleet in 1931 in San Antonio, Texas. He initially named it Zone Therapy. In 1993, Dr. Peter Goldman from San Francisco learned and refined this method and created his version called the Zone Technique.
Dr. Fleet taught that there are only six types of disturbances that can affect the human body: glandular, eliminative, nervous, digestive, muscular, and circulatory. Any disease, pain, or discomfort can be linked to one or more of these disturbances in the body’s six systems or zones.
What is Zone Technique?
The zone is a technique that stimulates the spinal cord. It targets specific points that connect to certain areas of the brain. This stimulation sends healing energy to the brain center, which needs balance. Once balanced, the brain can send the right signals to the body to help it heal.
All diseases, aches, and discomforts in the body can be linked to one or more of the six systems or zones.
Once the root cause is identified, care can be focused on that specific area. This often leads to quicker and longer-lasting relief compared to traditional methods.
What are the Six Zones?
The brain has six centers that link to specific zones in the body:
Glandular System
The glandular center in the brain regulates all the glands in the body, including the thyroid, adrenals, and reproductive organs. Any trauma or strain on these glands can send signals to the brain.
If the strain is significant, it may block normal nerve energy as a result of which, the glands are either overactive or underactive. A balance in the glandular system can improve mood, increase focus, support reproductive health, and strengthen the immune system.
Glands in the Head
- Pineal
- Pituitary
- Memory
- Energy
- Skin
- Hair
Glands in the Stomach
- Thyroid
- Mammary
- Adrenals
Glands in the Kidney Region
- Pancreas
- Liver
- Appetite
- Sleep
- Elimination
Glands in the Pelvis
- Uterus
- Ovaries
- Prostate
- Gonads
Kidneys
- Relaxation
- Outlook on life
- Temper
- Concentration
Systems
- Immune System
- Hormonal System
Eliminative System
The eliminative zone includes the organs that help remove waste from the body, such as the sinuses, urinary tract, skin, bowels, and lungs. When this zone is balanced, waste removal returns to normal. A healed eliminative system can help with conditions like allergies, asthma, constipation, bladder issues, skin problems, and sinus issues.
Key Organs
- Sinuses (mucus elimination)
- Nasal passages
- Throat
- Bronchial tubes
- Lungs
- Kidneys
- Bladder (urination)
- Small intestine
- Colon (bowel movements)
- Skin
Functions
- Toxin removal
- Maintaining alkaline/acid balance
Nervous System
The nervous system is managed by the cerebrum’s hemispheres, which handle our thoughts and emotions. It consists of nerve cells and fibers that connect throughout the body. When this system is out of balance, it can affect many functions such as sight, hearing, digestion, mood, and sleep. Head injuries, like concussions, can also harm the nervous system.
Key Functions
- Eyes and ears (sense organs)
- Solar plexus
- Digestion
- Mood and relaxation
- Sleep
- Reproductive organs
- Appetite and elimination
- Nerves
- Immune system
- Hormonal balance
Digestive System
The digestive system is the fourth zone closely tied to our diet. An unhealthy diet filled with preservatives and chemicals can harm digestion. This zone is balanced with a proper diet, improved nutrient absorption, and reduced food sensitivities.
Key Components
- Liver
- Appetite and taste
- Salivary glands
- Digestion
- Gallbladder
- Pancreas
- Elimination
- Bowels and stomach glands
- Intestines
- Food assimilation
- Weight
- Energy
Muscular System
The muscular system controls all muscles and directly affects spinal alignment and nerve connections. If this zone is damaged, it can lead to poor balance, posture issues, and increased muscle pain or sensitivity.
Key Areas
- Muscles in the neck and arms
- Movement
- Normal sensation
- Nerve function
- Muscles of the chest, abdomen, and back
- Spinal alignment
- Muscle tone, ease, and strength
- Muscles in the pelvic region and thighs
- Walking
- Muscles from thighs to feet
- Relaxation and immune system support
- Balance and center of gravity
Circulatory System
Zone 6 is the circulatory system. It is responsible for moving blood through the heart, arteries, veins, and capillaries. If this zone is not working properly, it can lead to high or low blood pressure, varicose veins, heart issues, or thyroid problems.
Key Components
- Thyroid gland
- Blood pressure
- Heart health and strength
- Blood vessels in the back, arms, chest, abdomen, and legs
- Circulation
- Lymph vessels
- Limb movement
- Relaxation
How Does Zone Technique Work?
The body can be seen as an “electrical machine.” The six brain centers act as the “positive terminal,” while specific points in the spinal cord serve as the “negative terminal.” When there is a disturbance, one or more of these centers can become “shorted out.”
Normal function can be disrupted by stress, which may come from thoughts (emotional), trauma (physical), or toxins (chemical). When brain centers are balanced, the body can better adapt to stress, making it more resilient.
Zone practitioners assess which brain centers are out of harmony with their systems by feeling specific points on the patient’s head. These points are linked to the six brain centers. If a brain center isn’t sending the right signals, the related body system can suffer. To correct this, the practitioner stimulates four specific points in the spinal cord linked to the affected brain center.
This sends a healing energy up the spinal cord to the brain centers that need balance. Once balanced, these centers can send proper signals to the body’s systems and improve overall function and healing.
This technique is especially helpful for those with chronic symptoms who have tried other treatments. Patients often experience relief from headaches, migraines, neck pain, back pain, and stress.

FAQs
What is the zone technique treatment?
Thurman Fleet developed Zone Therapy in 1931. This treatment is based on the idea that six key zones in the body are linked to illnesses, pain, and various medical conditions.
How does zone technique work?
Zone Technique uses gentle touch and pressure on specific areas of the body to help balance its zones. The balanced zones help the body function better and improve overall health and wellness.
How many body zones are there?
The human body has ten vertical zones that run from head to toe and horizontal zones. The horizontal zones primarily use the feet to map the body.
