SPF 30/50 Ingredients Explained

Zinc Oxide

ZnO is the broadest UVA and UVB reflector, approved by the FDA. It occurs naturally in zincite but is mostly man-made and is used in cosmetics. Today, nano-sized zinc oxides are found in beauty products.

These nano-sized ZnO increase a product’s UV protection. While they have harmful effects on coral reefs, no possible damage to the skin is known.

Alpha-Arbutin

It is made from glucose and hydroquinone, and can also be obtained from the fermentation of soybeans. All these are antioxidants- protect skin cells from sun damage.

Alpha-arbutin is also used with other ingredients to cope with hyperpigmentation. These include Vitamin C, retinol, tranexamic acid, and niacinamide.

Titanium Dioxide

Titanium Dioxide has UVA and UVB properties. It is non-irritating and non-comedogenic. Titanium Dioxide is a physical sunscreen, meaning that it prevents sun rays from reaching the skin.

Protection against UV radiation prevents signs of aging. Sun damage causes wrinkles, fine lines, and hyperpigmentation. Titanium Dioxide reflects sun rays reaching your skin, thus preventing premature aging.

Water

Water is the largest and most important ingredient of all cosmetic products. What makes it so popular? Its universal solvent ability. It helps dissolve other ingredients in the formation of a product.

Hyaluronic Acid

Hyaluronic acid is naturally present in healthy skin. It is humectant and promotes hydrated, soothing skin. Why is it so hydrating? Because of its ability to bind and hold large amounts of water.

Hyaluronic acid is found in our bodies such as in the eyes and joints. Studies show that the ingredient has anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory properties. This helps in the speed recovery of wounds.

Pearl Powder

As the name suggests, this ingredient is obtained by grinding salt-water or fresh-water pearls. Pearls are rich in potassium, amino acids, calcium, magnesium, and antioxidant compounds.

Two antioxidants found in pearls are Glutathione and Superoxide Dismutase (SOD). Both these oxidants reduce the signs of aging.

Collagen

Collagen is the most important structural protein in your body. It is an effective humectant and skin moisturizer. Moisturized skin is associated with increased elasticity and decreased wrinkles on skin. Collagen is also necessary for a healthy skin barrier.

Aloe Vera Leaf Juice

Aloe Vera Leaf Juice is extracted from aloe barbadensis- the aloe vera plant. It is anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, moisturizing, and helps heal wounds.

Aloe vera is packed with Vitamin E, C, and A. These help fight free radicals and the damage they cause.

Panax Ginseng Root Extract

It is a popular herb in Asia. Panax Ginseng Root contains antioxidants, vitamins B12 and D, and flavonoids. It improves skin texture, increases skin hydration, and evens skin tone.

Vitamin B12 and D in the Ginseng Root increase collagen production in the skin. Collagen further gives the skin a firm and plump appearance. Ginseng also helps with hyperpigmentation. It disrupts the production of tyrosinase– an enzyme involved in skin darkening.

Ascorbic Acid

Vitamin C is called ascorbic acid. It is largely produced in the human body. Though important for the immune system and overall health, Vitamin C has numerous skin benefits.

It improves acne scars, dark spots, and hyperpigmentation. How? It blocks the skin-darkening process when exposed to UV.

Conclusion

With increasing temperatures and polluted environments, human skin is more exposed to harmful UV rays than ever. Sunscreens help protect the skin from the damaging effects of skin damage and sunburns.

Also, you can put effort into protecting natural skin protectors like collagen, ascorbic acid, and water. Maintain a healthy water level and eat a diet full of vitamins and proteins.
